Mulcahy Modern was founded in 1995 as
a contemporary art exhibition program in Dallas, Texas by Director Cynthia
Mulcahy. After
fourteen years as a public space Mulcahy Modern, since 2007, is currently
focused on private art dealing and independent curatorial
projects and events held in non-traditional locations that emphasize
active community participation.
Recent projects and exhibitions have ranged from a guerrilla taco party at
El Camino Transmissions and Fiesta de Despedida, a night
of mariachi
performances at a local dive bar to XXI: Conflicts in a New Century, a contemporary photography exhibition co-curated
with Charles Dee Mitchell, that examined conflicts and wars in the
first decade of the 21st century at the City of Dallas'
newest public
exhibition space, the Oak Cliff Cultural Center in April 2011.
Other recent exhibitions include two exhibitions of the work of
under-recognized documentary photographers of the modern period for
the American Institute of Architects/Dallas Center for Architecture: Birth of Surf: The 1960s and
1970s Documentary Photography
of LeRoy Grannis (2009) and Marcel
Gautherot: Mid-Century Photographs of Oscar Niemeyer’s Brasilia (2007).
Upcoming projects include Square Dance: A Community Project, an event
at the newly-built Trinity River Audubon Center in Dallas
on November 12, 2011, that proposes art as social practice in the form
of an outdoor seasonal community dance. This project is a
collaborative initiative that insists on fellowship in our community and is consonant
with the belief that art resides in every day life as
social, cultural
practice. Square Dance: A Community Project is
generously funded by an Idea Fund Grant from The Andy Warhol
Foundation
for the Visual Arts awarded to co-curators Leila Grothe and Cynthia Mulcahy in 2011.
Cynthia Mulcahy was the founder and director of Mulcahy
Modern from 1995 until 2007, a contemporary art gallery known primarily
for
discovering and
establishing emerging artists who developed into some of the most
important artists in our region working today with
representation in museums, including the
Dallas Museum of Art and Modern Art Museum of Fort Worth, and many of the most
interesting
private collections. For fourteen years, Mulcahy Modern presented a
surprising mix of fresh exhibitions of artists who were
chosen based
on their intent to make new statements in their work with
each successive body of work.
Our twin mission of
discovery and development through exhibitions devoted exclusively to
each artist consistently set Mulcahy Modern
apart from most
commercial gallery two-person and group exhibition presentations. In
addition to the gallery's principle focus on cutting-edge
contemporary art,
Mulcahy Modern has researched, funded and mounted historical exhibitions
of photography of under-recognized documentary
photographers of the
modern period including the work of American LeRoy Grannis and
Brazilians Marcel Gautherot and Jose Medeiros.
